Codes

Codes was the assignment that I struggled the most with. It was hard for me to understand and to find codes that were applicable to my project. The one I struggled with the most was the Daycare. I thought that would be the easiest to find codes on because it has to do with children, but I could only find very basic codes. I need to do a little more research and try to find a few more specific codes that apply to my project.

Beginning Bubble Diagrams and Matrix

I created the first Bubble Diagrams and Matrix for my space during the program analysis assignment. I did not have my floor plans yet, but it started me thinking on my adjacencies and circulation.

Program Analysis

The Week of October 7th I focused on Program Analysis. For each business I went through and figured out each of the rooms needs, activities, qualitative characteristics, and quantitative characteristics. I created bubble diagrams as well as a criteria and adjacency matrix. This took a lot of research and thought process. I need to work on expanding my criteria matrix for my daycare. I need to add in more rooms that I did not think of until more in-depth research later. For the furniture types I researched typical sizes of all the furniture I would need in the building. This will help me later for the prototypical drawings.

Precedent Studies

Last week we focused on precedent studies for our project. I struggled to find daycares that would let me inside to see their design and layout. I ended up using my experience at working at a preschool, and information from a friend whose parents own a daycare in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Neither of the daycares were exactly what I was thinking about for mine. I want mine to be creative, fun, organized, and a place where the children enjoy coming. The daycare I looked at was older, needed to be updated, and was not very clean. These precedent studies showed me not only what I want to incorporate in my daycare, but also what I do not want in my daycare.

This week my main focus is program analysis. I will be digging deeper and looking more into detail what all is needed for each of my spaces. This is where I will figure out how much information I really have and what I need to look more into. I have found some fun ideas from a home daycare. They divided one large room into different themes and sections. There is a small, play grocery store, jail, and houses as well as a stage and a park.

Research

This week I worked on researching the three spaces I chose for my Capstone project. I struggled on finding sites at the beginning, but by the end I had found some very interesting articles. Some of my favorites were the ones that showed pictures of a current bookstore. There are so many interesting ways to display books and create circulation. One of my favorite articles was “The 20 Most Beautiful Bookstores in the World.” They ranged from bookstores that were very traditional and ornamental, to outdoor bookstores. The shelving would be located in stairs, three story walls, or the balcony of an old theater. The rest of this week I will be working on precedent studies. I will be visiting a bookstore, daycare, and cafe in Norman, and then researching others online. This will help me figure out details that are necessary for me to start this project.
